Sending a parcel from Nepal to the UK? The cost depends on four things: how much it weighs, whether it’s documents or goods, which vendor you pick, and how fast you need it there. The live table below shows current starting rates for both documents and parcels, pulled straight from vendor quotes. Two things make this route different — a lot of what leaves Kathmandu for Britain is paperwork for university or visa applications, and the UK gives real gifts between family a duty break that countries like Australia and India don’t.

How much does it cost to send a parcel from Nepal to the UK?

There’s no fixed Nepal to UK parcel cost. Anyone who quotes a price without asking what’s inside is guessing. The real cost depends on weight, size, what you’re sending, which courier or cargo service you use, and whether you choose economy or express.

Check the documents column against the parcel column before you pack. A sealed envelope of certificates is priced as paper and clears customs easily. Add a khada or a packet of tea alongside those transcripts, though, and it becomes a parcel — priced and inspected as one. If you’re sending both, send them separately.

The table also shows that cost per kilogram drops as the parcel gets heavier. So if you’re sending Dashain gifts to relatives in Reading or Aldershot, one combined box usually costs less than three small ones — and means one customs check instead of three. Rates change with each vendor’s capacity, so treat these figures as a snapshot, and check Hyre for a live quote on your actual parcel.

Sending documents to the UK

The UK is Nepal’s second-most popular study destination after Australia. That shows up at the courier counters on Kantipath every January, and again from August to September — transcripts, character certificates, migration certificates, WES envelopes, and employer letters for skilled-worker visas.

A few tips for this route:

  • Declare them as documents, not a parcel. It’s cheaper, faster, and what the customs form expects for an envelope of paper.
  • Always send tracked when a deadline is involved. If an admissions office says nothing arrived, a waybill number settles it.
  • Give yourself extra time before the deadline. Customs holds are unpredictable, and a missed application window can’t be refunded by any courier.

What can you send to the UK?

Most things a Nepali family wants to send travel fine — clothes, winter wear, pashmina, dhaka topi, packaged biscuits and namkeen, sealed pickles, handicrafts, small household items, gifts, and documents. Food is where parcels usually get stopped.

Nepal’s own export rules apply too, no matter the destination: no cash or currency, narcotics, weapons and explosives, counterfeit goods, or protected wildlife products.

UK customs, gifts, and who actually pays

This is the part people get wrong, and it costs their family in Britain money.

UK customs only treats a parcel as a gift if it’s sent person to person, marked as a gift on the form, and tied to a real occasion. Writing “gift” on stock you’re shipping to a London shop doesn’t make it one — customs goes by the declaration.

Under a set value, a genuine gift between individuals skips import VAT and duty entirely. Above it, VAT applies, and past a higher threshold, Customs Duty stacks on top. HMRC sets and changes these figures, so confirm the current thresholds before posting anything expensive.

Whatever is owed gets collected from your recipient in the UK, usually before the parcel is released. That’s why a correct UK address and working phone number matter even more here than for a domestic delivery — a parcel stuck at a depot because nobody could reach the recipient is the most common version of “my parcel is stuck.” Our guide to who pays customs duty on a parcel from Nepal covers the DDU and DDP details.

Pashmina and handmade textiles

Nepali-origin handmade textiles — pashmina especially, the single most common thing sent from Kathmandu to a British address — may qualify for a lower, sometimes zero, duty rate under a UK trade scheme for developing countries. But it needs a certificate of origin arranged at export. You can’t claim it after your sister has already paid at the door, so ask your vendor before dispatch if the shipment’s worth it.

Booking, tracking and payment

Booking, KYC, tracking and payment work the same way on every corridor Hyre covers — the full step-by-step walkthrough covers all of it, from entering the destination and weight through to the waybill number you’ll use to track the parcel to the UK. Payment goes through eSewa, Khalti, ConnectIPS or cash to the vendor, and generally needs to clear before dispatch.

Is my parcel exempt from UK customs duty if I mark it as a gift?

Only if it genuinely is one. A gift sent person to person, declared as a gift, and tied to an occasion skips import VAT and duty up to a threshold set by HMRC; above that, VAT applies, and Customs Duty kicks in past a higher threshold. Writing 'gift' on a commercial shipment doesn't qualify it. Check current thresholds on gov.uk before sending something expensive, since HMRC revises them.

Can I send achar, sukuti or dried food to the UK from Nepal?

Sealed, packaged items like jarred pickle, biscuits and dried spice travel most reliably. Raw meat, fresh fish and dairy face the tightest restrictions and are commonly refused. Couriers add their own food rules on top of the government's, so confirm with your vendor before packing any food.

How long does it take to send documents from Nepal to the UK for a visa or university application?

Express is the fastest option, and the transit estimate shown at booking is what to plan from. Build in buffer before an intake deadline regardless — a customs hold is unpredictable and a missed deadline can't be refunded. Always send tracked when a deadline is attached.

Do I need a UK address and phone number to send a parcel there from Nepal?

Yes, and an accurate one. UK customs or the courier may need to contact your recipient to collect duty and VAT before releasing the parcel. A wrong or missing phone number is one of the most common reasons a parcel sits at a depot, so confirm both details before booking.

Can I send pashmina or handmade woollens to the UK without paying full duty?

Nepali handmade textiles like pashmina may qualify for a lower or zero duty rate under a UK trade scheme, but it needs a certificate of origin arranged at export. Your recipient can't claim it after duty's already been billed, so ask your vendor before dispatch if it's worth it.

What can't I send from Nepal to the UK?

Nepal's export rules rule out cash and currency, narcotics, weapons and explosives, counterfeit goods, and protected wildlife products regardless of destination. On the UK side, perishable food — especially raw meat, fresh fish and dairy — faces the tightest restriction. Your courier will also have its own restricted list, so check before you pack.
